POLICE EXPRESSES COMMITMENT TO PROMOTE FREE EXPRESSION, SAFETY OF JOURNALISTS DURING ELECTIONS

In a bid to promote free expression and ensure safety of journalists during the 2025 General Election,  Malawi Police Service has reiterated its commitment to promote free expression and safety of journalists in Malawi.

Speaking on behalf of the Inspector General, Commissioner of Police responsible for Central West Region, Babra Tsiga has made the remarks today (Friday) in Lilongwe on the sidelines of a media engagement between Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) from the Central West and Central East regions and media practitioners under the banners of Media Council of Malawi (MCM) and MISA Malawi.

Tsiga emphasized the importance of freedom of expression and safety of journalists, saying the media is crucial for credible information not only during elections, but beyond the electoral calendar.

"We recognize the critical role that media plays in disseminating information during elections, and it's our duty to ensure that journalists are safe when executing their duties," said the Commissioner.

She therefore asked Police PROs to cement relations with the media through continued interactions and effective communication.

In his remarks, MCM Executive Director, Moses Kaufa highlighted dangers that journalists face during elections including intimidation and harassment.

"Election time is a crucial period, and journalists need protection from Police to ensure their safety," he said.

Kaufa further reminded journalists to remain professional as a key pillar of self-protection while being  vigilant and taking necessary precautions to ensure their safety while gathering information.

In the run-up to the September 16, 2025 General Election, Media Council of Malawi organized the media engagement following similar engagements the Council had held with police PROs from stations under the Northern, Eastern, South West and South East regions mid this year.

The engagements aimed at discussing security issues affecting journalists during elections, and the Friday's engagement drew together eighteen police PROs from stations under the Central West and Central East regions.
