The Malawi Police Service (MPS) wishes to inform the public that road accidents recorded during this year's Christmas period have decreased by 16 percent when compared to similar accidents recorded in 2021 during the same period.
However, an analysis of the data on these accidents shows that the total number of people killed from the accidents in 2020 has increased by 10 percent.
A total of 36 road accidents have been recorded during the Christmas Holiday in 2022 as compared to 43 road accidents which were recorded in 2021, representing the 16 percent decrease.
11 people have been killed from 11 fatal road accidents that have been recorded during the 2022 Christmas, which is 10 percent higher than 10 people who were killed during Christmas in 2021.
Of the 36 road accidents recorded in 2022, 11 were fatal, three were serious while the rest were minor. Of the 43 road accidents that were recorded in 2021, 10 were fatal, three were serious, with the remaining ones were minors.
11 of the 36 road accidents recorded in 2022 happened in the South West Region, while 10 happened in the Central West Region. Central East Region, South East Region, Northern Region and Eastern Region recorded five, one, five and four accidents respectively.
The major causes of such road accidents have been identified as over-speeding and drink and drive.
MPS assures Malawians that it's traffic officers have been deployed in all major roads across the country where they are enforcing road traffic rules and regulations to ensure safety of all road users.
MPS further appeals to all road users in the country to be cautious when using public roads especially now that everyone is in the festive mood.
