MPS arrest 7 armed robbers behind Lilongwe murder, robberies

Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested seven suspected armed robbers in connection to a spate of robberies and murder targeting Chinese businesspersons in the city of Lilongwe.

The Service has also recovered two firearms - an AK47 Assault Rifle with five live ammunition and a pistol, and two motor vehicles used in the commission of the crimes.

Evidence shows that the seven were, among others, responsible for the infamous robbery at Njewa in the city where a Chinese businessman was shot dead and robbed and another one in Area 3 whose CCTV footage went viral on social media where cash was also stolen.

The gang, which is linked to five robbery cases in the city, was operating from Mangochi and only used to come into the capital to hit their targets which were identified by a female suspect who is among the arrested. 

Meanwhile, MPS is encouraging members of the public to continue furnishing it with information about any suspected criminals in their areas. It further promises to continue working hard in preventing the occurrence of crimes and ensuring that Malawi is safe and secure for all.

Four of the suspects are Blessings James, 35, Yusufu Adam, 40, Muhammad Jamali, 41, and Mussah Austine, 50, who come from Mangochi District. The other three are Yamikani Alderico Petro, 42, Precious Biliat, 31, and Tailosi Mkwapatila, 44 who hail from Dedza, Ntcheu and Machinga districts respectively.
