IG's wife applauds Lunzu women welfare

On February 11, 2022 wife to the Inspector General of Malawi Police Service, Mai Jacqueline Kainja visited Lunzu Police Unit and appreciated the cordial relationship among women welfare members at the police unit 

During her speech, Mai IG encouraged the grouping to continue the spirit of working together to uplift further the services of the grouping. 

She said "love must be the centre of all our deeds. Prayer among women is key". 

Mai IG, took time to hear some views and requests from the women to deliver directly to the Inspector General.

Malawi Police celebrates 100th Anniversary

Malawi Police Service on November 30 2021 commemorated its 100th Anniversary.

The event was presided over by His Excellency the State President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and it was held at the National Police Headquarters in Area 30, Lilongwe.

The President said there is a need to equip the police with adequate resources to ensure effective and efficient policing. He also said it is the responsibility of every Malawian to help the police rebuild its image.

Criminal Investigations

This department is responsible for investigating serious cases. Officers in this department put on civilian clothes to mingle well with the public as they gather intelligence, track leads to suspects and arrest criminals. Sections within the CID include: Interpol, Homicide Unit, Drug Unit, Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Unit, Dog Section, Fingerprint Section, Digital Forensic Unit, Crime Analysis Unit, Anti-Organized Crime Unit, Fiscal and Fraud Section, Wildlife and Environmental Investigation Crime Unit, Firearms and Ballistic Unit and Photography.

Police Mobile Service

This is a specialized branch of the Malawi Police Service that is responsible for public order management, patrols, escorts, guard and VVIP security. PMS Officers put on camouflage uniform and are ordinarily deployed to quell riots and public disorders.

MPS arrests three over murder of Engineer, recovers pistol

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of two men that occurred on January 25, 2026 in Dedza District.

The suspects are: Kennedy Demson (29), Barbra Nkwezalamba (25), and Witman Elisa (19), all from Kunthulu Village, Traditional Authority Malili, Lilongwe District.

Police Arrest Village Headman and Five Others in Dowa Graveyard Tampering Linked to Albinism Case

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested Village Headman Khombera and five other suspects in connection with the tampering of the grave of Ms. Maunsamatha Zacharia, a person with albinism. The incident occurred at Khombera Village, T/A Nsakambewa in Dowa, where she was buried in August 2023. Her grave was desecrated on 12 January 2026.

“I am Inspector General for everybody,” IGP Luhanga declares

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. Richard Luhanga has urged officers in the Malawi Police Service (MPS)  to embrace teamwork, performance and discipline, as the cornerstone of effective policing. 

He made the remarks at National Police Headquarters, Area 30 in Lilongwe during his maiden Management meeting on October 14, 2025 attended by Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners from all the six policing regions countrywide.

The Heads of Branch at National Police Headquarters also participated in the meeting, held under the theme “Dancing to a Leadership Challenge.”
